Capitalism Cartoon
The audience of this cartoon is clearly the American public. This is extremely evident for a few reasons. One example of this is that the character is wearing a Captain America-like costume. Another reason is the fact that he's riding on a bald eagle. The cartoon depicts capitalism as being a wonderful economic system. It does this by showing the character holding a bunch of money with more flying behind him. This also implies that other economic systems are inferior to capitalism because they will not result in as much money for citizens. This cartoon does a good job of making capitalism seem good because who wouldn't want to ride a bald eagle while wearing a Captain America costume and holding a bunch of money.

The sensationalist aspect of the cartoon is clear. I believe it could also be an appeal to citizens of other nations, to perhaps demonstrate American superiority, especially towards Communist nations.
ReplyDeleteAlthough I agree that this cartoon is intended for the american public, I think it could also be argued that this could apply to countries all over the world. America has almost always been a very dominant and successful country. If citizens of other countries were to view this cartoon, they might connect America's success with their capitalist way of life and support this idea more.
ReplyDeleteI had a similar perspective when discussing the audience of my group's civil right's newspaper article, and some advice I was given in one of the comments was not to say the audience was the american public, but make it more specific instead.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you that the undisputed audience for the "Capitalism!!" cartoon is the American people or moreover, capitalist enthusiasts. I think part of the cartoon's rhetoric lies in its, although biased, flair for making capitalism appear flamboyant and preeminent.
ReplyDeleteI agree that the audience is the American people, but you could also argue that it is meant for people throughout the world. America is typically used a country to compare things to, and other countries could see this cartoon and want to be like America. It could inspire change in other countries in order to become a more capitalist society.
